PrepNow Tutor - Alex L.

A test prep tutor, Alex has worked in education and mental health research for the past ten years. Alex holds a BA in psychology with a Segal Design Certificate from Northwestern University; he also has an MEd in secondary math from Xavier University. After graduating, he worked as a research coordinator at a child psychology lab at UCLA. During this time, he tutored math at a learning center, which led him to pursue his MEd. Alex taught as a classroom teacher and math specialist before transitioning to curriculum development, tutoring, and research.
“As an educator, I believe that we all have great capacity to learn, to cope, and to achieve,” Alex says. While Alex’s first teaching experience was in middle school as a summer camp junior counselor, he started tutoring professionally in 2016. “My proudest moments have been seeing students—previously intimidated and frustrated by math—graduate and pursue degrees involving college math,” Alex says. Throughout his career, Alex has taught and tutored K-12 math and ACT/SAT prep. As a classroom teacher, he taught high school geometry.
“I strive to help young people remove barriers to their academic achievement through conscientious tutoring and test prep,” Alex says. “In addition, I create accessible test prep materials and offer mental health-informed curriculum and consulting solutions to fellow educators.” Alex prioritizes cultivating his students’ perseverance and reasoning skills through mindful instruction. “My teaching style focuses on scaffolded individual coping and problem-solving skills,” he explains. Drawing on motivational interviewing and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Alex helps his students develop greater self-belief, resilience, and intrinsic motivation so they can reach their full potential.
Alex was a National Merit Scholar and a member of Pi Mu Epsilon Math Honor Society. Alex conducted and wrote a study on promoting coping and problem-solving skills in the math classroom, which was published in 2024.
In high school, Alex ran cross-country and played Ultimate Frisbee. In college, he played a variety of intramural sports, including floor hockey, football, dodgeball, softball, and Ultimate Frisbee.
These days, Alex runs competitively, skis, and plays beach volleyball. “I volunteer with Luke5Adventures to go hiking and running with people who use wheelchairs,” Alex says. He also loves seeing live music, going on road trips, and is an avid skier in the winter.
