PrepNow Tutor - Maggie M.
A teacher by day and a tutor by night, Maggie is a born and bred Rhode Islander passionate about plants, puzzles, and providing the best educational experience for students. She earned a BS in journalism from Suffolk University and an MAT in elementary education from Brown University. Following a quarter-life crisis, she left her job as a sports journalist and served as an AmeriCorps Education Fellow at an urban public charter school, where she discovered her passion for education. She is now working as a fifth-grade teacher at the same school. In addition to her role as a teacher, since 2015, Maggie has taught English language development to small groups of kindergarten and first-grade students, after-school STEM programming to eighth-grade students, and SAT and ACT prep to high school students.
“I love watching my students grow,” Maggie says. “I also love the ‘a-ha!’ moments when they discover something new.” Her goal is to equip her students with the tools to become empathetic, critical thinkers with a safe place for them to take risks, make mistakes, and find their spark. Maggie has received numerous compliments from parents of students who love working with her. The foundation of her teaching philosophy is relationship building, and it stems from a quote from educator Lisa Delpit, who says, "I can't teach you unless I know you." She sees herself as an effective teacher because she seeks to know her students beyond their academic lives, and further describes herself as a "warm demander," meaning she has high expectations for all her students, but will give them the tools to succeed and every bit of support they need.
In high school, Maggie played soccer, softball, and basketball while working on the school newspaper and serving on the student council. In college, she wrote for Suffolk University’s online newspaper and was also part of the Center for Community Engagement. She is an avid reader and puzzler, and loves to be active outside--hiking, running, kayaking. She also makes greeting cards in her spare time and maintains a personal blog. Additionally, she can wiggle her ears and is allergic to raw fruits and vegetables.
