PrepNow Tutor - Brandyce I.
A spirited, curious, and compassionate tutor, Brandyce is passionate about expanding her knowledge and inspiring others to become well-rounded thinkers. She holds a BA in communication from the University of Southern California and an MA in liberal arts and creative writing from St. Edward's University. Brandyce received the Mary Jane and Wendell Mayes Jr. Scholarship for having sustained a 4.0 GPA at St. Edward's in 2016 and she graduated with honors at both USC and St. Edward's. During and after undergrad, she was an actor in films, TV, and theatre based in Los Angeles. She began volunteering with students during that time and teaching quickly became her new passion. While earning her master’s degree, she worked as an after school teacher and substitute at a charter school. She is currently a tutor and freelance writer.
Brandyce started tutoring as a volunteer for Los Angeles educational programs. She loves seeing her students' eyes light up when they read stories together and when they have "a-ha" learning moments when concepts finally click into place. She has worked with students from third grade to college and beyond, covering all subjects. However, Brandyce specializes in writing, English, and SAT reading and writing. Consistently, the younger students she’s worked with have improved their grades, and the older students she’s worked with have increased test scores and earned admission into the colleges of their choice.
When asked about her teaching style, Brandyce explains that it is rooted in improvisation--listening, identifying, and adapting. She listens and caters to her students' needs, always ensuring they're on the same page. “It's a give-and-take relationship where I act as a guide, bolstering confidence while drawing on their strengths to address and boost any weaknesses,” Brandyce explains. “I adopted this style because everyone's brain is different! There's no blanket-approach to connecting with and helping a student actualize their potential.” Her lessons are never boring as she utilizes humor and the students' interests to keep them engaged and energized.
Due to her acting career, Brandyce has seen herself on TV or big screens in the past, and she’s had many poems and essays published in literary journals. As a student, she played lacrosse and field hockey, was involved in theatre, choir, slam poetry, and classical and jazz piano. A card-carrying nerd, Brandyce loves graphic novels, board games, poetry, dancing, vegan cooking, astrophysics, and philosophy.
