Jeremiah's Bio

A dedicated husband, friend, and teacher, Jeremiah takes his responsibilities seriously and respects others who do the same. He holds a PhD in communication and culture from Indiana University, an MA in English from the University of Tennessee, and a BA in English from Clemson University. He has over twenty years of teaching experience and has tutored in both writing centers and individual situations; he has also worked for several different standardized testing companies, teaching the SAT, ACT, and GRE. Though his training is primarily in English and communication, he began his academic career as a computer scientist and took math coursework through calculus. Additionally, he has worked extensively with students on the math sections of the SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT. Jeremiah has also received numerous teaching awards.

Jeremiah began his educational career as a tutor and a teaching associate throughout his MA and PhD programs. After completing both degrees, he worked as a full-time professor in both English and communication departments, teaching composition, literature, and communication courses. He eventually left his professorship to marry and live with his wife and, since then, he has worked as a private tutor, editor, and college instructor.

“My favorite thing about teaching is encouraging students to become active agents of their own success,” Jeremiah says. He explains that his job as a teacher is to be an expert and a resource for his students. “That said, what this means is undeniably different in every teaching situation,” he says. “I must treat each student or group of students as distinct and adjust to the needs in front of me.” Furthermore, one key to this approach is to show students that their experience matters and that they are a crucial part of their success. If Jeremiah and his students build trust and cooperation, students are more likely to feel ownership of their education, and they become more successful as a result.

When Jeremiah was a student himself, he played basketball, softball, and racquetball, but only at the church and intramural level. He also enjoyed riding his Huffy trick bike. At this point, his days of running through screens and hopping on wheel pegs are primarily behind him, but he still loves to bike and hike. His PhD specialization was in media studies, so he also enjoys watching TV and films of all sorts. Finally, one of Jeremiah's favorite things to do is get half-off candy the day after holidays. “It is one of life's pure and reliable joys," he says.
