PrepNow Tutor - Alex R.
A hard worker who is willing to spend as long as needed to complete a task, Alex holds a BS magna cum laude in information systems from the University of Maryland. Since graduating, he’s worked as a tutor as well as a contractor Installing TTY phones and other tech equipment.
Alex started tutoring at the recommendation of a professor. Throughout college, he worked as a teaching fellow for information systems courses; he was also a tutor for geography, information systems, and all math subjects, including calculus and statistics. “I enjoy helping students gain confidence in their abilities and master concepts that they couldn't do before,” Alex says. He is particularly skilled at helping students prepare for tests.
“I base my tutoring style on the Socratic method, and use leading questions to help students figure out solutions to problems,” Alex says. “I frequently find students know more than they think they know, and often just a few questions can get them on the right track and help them find the answer themselves.” However, if a student is really stuck, Alex tends to take a more direct approach to help them develop the tools to solve problems and gain independence.
In college, Alex was the president of the Jiu-Jitsu Club. At graduation, he received an honor cord for his years of tutoring, as well as an honor cord for graduating magna cum laude. Alex continues to practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to keep healthy and enjoys going to the movies. He loves a good joke and is always willing to take a second and listen to one. “I once hitchhiked from southern Maryland to DC to surprise someone for a party,” Alex shares.
