Amy's Bio

A dynamic and compassionate educator, Amy’s greatest skill is her ability to convey difficult math and science concepts in easy-to-understand language. She holds a BS in physics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and an MS in physics from the College of William and Mary. Since 2007, Amy has taught physics and math at several independent middle and high schools and has also tutored math and science since 2012.

When Amy was in high school and college, she noticed that complex concepts often came easily to her but not to all of her classmates. “Often, my classmates would turn to me to re-explain what the teacher had just taught,” Amy recalls. “This led me to wonder about the nature of learning, and I have since spent my life devoted to understanding the process of learning.” She decided to become a teacher after completing her master's degree as she loves working with students and helping them become confident with their skills. Over the years she has taught and tutored pre-algebra, algebra I, geometry, and physics at all levels.

"I teach each student with compassion and empathy,” Amy says. “I meet them where they are, and provide them with the tools they need to learn.” As a student herself, Amy encountered two types of teachers who ended up influencing my methods greatly. The first type seemed to make the subject matter as scary and difficult as possible while the second type was passionate and understanding with their teaching methods. Unsurprisingly, the second type of teacher was often more successful. “I feel that no subject is 'too hard' or 'too scary' for anyone to learn - all each student needs is the 'right' teacher, and the 'right' method to teach them with,” Amy reflects. “I used the two types of teachers I encountered to inform my career and guide my style of teaching and tutoring."

In high school, Amy participated in theater, chorus, science club, and photography. When she was in college, she worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland as a junior engineer for approximately four years. The project Amy worked on eventually was flown into space in the shuttle and, as a result, she’s touched an object that was flown in space. Amy is a stained-glass artist and has a dedicated studio in her basement. She also loves cats and reading books. In 2018, Amy was a speaker at the LLI Atlantic: Gaining STEAM.
