Jeffrey's Bio

Jeff earned his Bachelor's in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Southern California, where he was a recipient of the highest academic scholarship USC offered at that time, the Trustee Scholarship. He then earned his Master's in Physics at USC. He earned his teaching credential from California State University, Northridge, where he was awarded the Noyce Scholarship.

Jeff has taught at both public and private middle and high schools, as well as teaching as an adjunct faculty member in Physics at College of the Canyons. He has been a judge at both the Los Angeles County and California State Science Fairs for many years, and serves on the advisory committees to both fairs, as well. He has tutored throughout his career, and currently works as a studio teacher with underage actors on film sets, where he is responsible for both education and looking after the child actor's welfare.

"I enjoy passing on knowledge about and (hopefully) stirring interest in science and math," Jeff says, "and I think I have a talent for getting at the roots of misunderstandings and helping students to understand difficult subjects. I like to ask questions of students to see what they do understand and help them arrive at answers themselves, rather than just telling them or directly demonstrating the answer." When students have difficulty, Jeff breaks questions down further or approach problems from a different direction until he find something they can answer. He uses that answer to lead students back to the answer to the original question. "I think leading students to find the answer themselves, albeit perhaps in multiple steps, helps them understand and retain the material better than just showing them the answer," he says, "as well as giving the students more confidence in their own abilities."

In high school, Jeff was involved in drama and had lead roles in several school plays. In fact, he says, he was involved in so many groups and activities that he had his picture in the yearbook more than any other student. And despite all of this, he says, "I was voted the shyest guy in my class!" In college, he participated in residential student government.

These days, outside of work, he enjoys writing, drawing, and composing music. He says, "Probably like many people, I have the first draft of a novel I've written that I still haven't gotten around to rewriting and polishing a second draft..."
