Dyson loves to challenge himself and his students to achieve true understanding of educational knowledge. He holds a BS in physics and a BA in mathematics from the University of Rochester and an MS in physics from the University of Massachusetts, earning a research fellowship for his thesis proposal in theoretical particle physics. In earning these degrees, Dyson focused on polishing his problem-solving skills and on questioning overly rigid pedagogy. He truly believes that one learns best when one adapts material to his own perspectives.
Dyson began his instructional career in 2017, offering tutoring for four years to physics students in introductory mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and modern physics. Simultaneously, he worked as an undergraduate teaching assistant in a number of physics courses, including quantum mechanics of physical systems, advanced electricity and magnetism, applied boundary value problems and Fourier analysis, and general physics. Next as a graduate assistant, he worked as a teaching assistant in introductory physics courses, physics lab, the weather and our atmosphere course, and computational physics. Finally, since graduating in 2025, Dyson has worked as a private tutor of general scientific inquiry and calculus.
Dyson applies an adaptive but methodical mindset to his instruction. He first seeks to stoke interest and curiosity in his students, often employing a web of leading questions to help provide direction. All the while, he knows from his own experiences that he must not be overly prescriptive, lest he dampen a student’s zest for exploration. Therefore, he says, “Breadth and flexibility are the keystones for helping a student to find a personalized and engaging path to understanding.” Dyson also believes that engagement must then be paired with application. He notes, “A colleague of mine once said, ‘You'll learn more from your imperfect doing than my perfect telling,’ and I take that with me in any teaching role.” Clearly, he is applying this advice well, as he earned the Arthur Quinton Teaching Award for exemplary teaching performance from the UMass Amherst physics department.
Dyson’s free time is determined by a kind of mission statement: “My second favorite thing to do is learn a new skill, and my favorite is to goof around with the aforementioned skill.” In high school, Dyson developed performative skills, participating in theater, musical theater, and choir. He also began snowboarding as a youth, and he now is so good at tricks such as his personalized “floppy fish” that he works as a snowboarding instructor. Finally, other skills upon which Dyson is working include playing bass, sewing, basketball, and almost whistling.
