Chelsea has a background instructing both math and physics, teaching math in classrooms to students from middle school to high school as well as tutoring physics in college. She received her bachelor's from Oglethorpe University, where she double majored in physics and mathematics. After graduating, she moved to Philadelphia to teach math. Currently she is in Georgia to return to her studies and work as a math and physics tutor.
"I tutored throughout college and knew almost immediately that I loved working with people to help them understand difficult subject matter," says Chelsea. Hence, she immediately began work as a high school and middle school math teacher after completing her undergraduate degree. She has tutored both algebra-based and calculus-based physics. As far as math teaching is concerned, she has instructed in college calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations; she also has taught middle school math plus algebra 1, algebra 2, and geometry.
Chelsea's primary goal when tutoring is to get students to solve a problem with their own thinking, rather than deliver the answer to them. "In order to do this, I might help them outline the important information in a problem and ask them smaller questions to lead them to the final answer they need," she explains. Chelsea believes that every student is capable of performing well on mathematics and physics problems, and most students know far more than they give themselves credit for—they just don't know which questions to ask themselves. She encourages students to come to their own conclusions about the material by giving them a small push in the right direction.
In college Chelsea took part in several branches of physics research; she studied the fluctuations of periodic stars, the magnetic field around Jupiter, and machine learning. She also was the recipient of the Ronald Carlisle Prize for Excellence in Mathematics in Computer Science for her work in the mathematics department at Oglethorpe University as a stand out student, mentor, and part of the community
Chelsea participated in GSA's in high school and college; she also was active in the Putnam exam and mathematical modelling competitions in college.
"I actually spend a good amount of my free time studying mathematics," she says. "I really mean it when I say I love this stuff. I have recently been doing a deep dive into geometry, working through the 13 books of Euclid's Elements from Ancient Greece."
When not doing math, she loves to hike, swim, or be outside in general. She also loves to play video games like Elden Ring or Persona, and is a big fan of movies as well.
