PrepNow Tutor - Flora P.

Veteran tutor Flora is hardworking, kind, and honest. Tutoring is a meaningful and fulfilling part of her life. Flora holds two bachelor’s degrees from Michigan State University—a BA in mathematics and a BS in computer science. While an undergrad, Flora worked as an undergraduate teaching assistant, supporting students in a range of math courses. She is currently a graduate student at University of Michigan studying quantitative finance and risk management in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
As a high school student, Flora volunteered for two years with an organization that provided enrichment activities for children and adults with mental and physical disabilities. Since 2020, she has volunteered with an advocacy group that works with abused and neglected children. Of the work, Flora says “These experiences have been incredibly meaningful to me and have taught me the importance of kindness, respect, and treating everyone equally.” She carries these values into every interaction, especially when tutoring students.
While Flora primarily focuses on mathematics—including everything from algebra and geometry to trigonometry and calculus I-IV—she also has years of experience with test prep. She has tutored all sections of the PSAT, SAT, and ACT, covering English grammar, reading and writing, mathematics, and problem solving. Her earliest tutoring experience was with children ages 4-18 and some of her most recent experience was at her university mathematics department.
Flora is from the Netherlands and as such moved through the school system speaking English as a second language. This experience has given her unique insight into the challenges posed by standardized tests. “I always aim to meet students where they are and help them strengthen both their understanding and their confidence,” she says. Her tutoring style is built on strong communication, patience, and flexibility. An important piece of this approach is to make sure students understand each step of a problem and to never make them feel bad when they get something wrong. Flora has worked with students both with and without learning disabilities and has helped all of them gain confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and reach their academic goals. “I love helping students find their strengths and showing them that they are capable of much more than they might believe.”
Flora greatly values the relationships she’s developed with people in her life and she dedicates plenty of time to maintaining those connections. Those relationships range from the members of her high school tennis team to close friends from her youth to her family. In her free time, she still plays tennis in addition to snowboarding. She also loves solving puzzles and playing board games.
