PrepNow Tutor - David W.
Originally torn between studying engineering and the social sciences, David ended up pursuing a liberal arts education in psychology at Trinity University. After spending ten years working in pension benefits and human resources and development, he finished a master's in Spiritual Formation at Wheaton College, where he developed his teaching approach and honed his teaching methods. David first began tutoring when he volunteered with WITS (Working In The Schools), tutoring second and third graders in Chicago schools. Finding that he loved working with students, he then began tutoring students privately. He is certified to teach ESL and has been teaching English language skills to immigrants in Chicago and international business professionals for several years.
In addition to his other tutoring and mentoring experience, David has been a test prep and an academic tutor with StudyPoint, PrepNow's sister company, for a total of 17 years. During that time he has worked with students in standardized test prep (ACT, SAT, PSAT, and SSAT/ISEE) and various academic subjects (math, reading, writing, science, and study skills). His expertise, patience, and passion for helping students reach their full potential make him a favorite with students and parents alike.
When it comes to tutoring, David employs a learner-centered approach that is tuned to the learning style of the student. He likes to ask questions and see what his students are thinking. David says, "All of my best teachers got me thinking and engaging with relevant content. Understanding comes from within a student; however unpolished it may be initially, there is usually a kernel of understanding that just needs to be fanned into a flame."
When he is not working, David enjoys pursuing his various interests, including traveling (his favorite destinations are England, India, and Italy), exploring tech innovations, reading good fiction, and playing the electric guitar. He also stays active by working out, biking, and running.
