Sarah's Bio

Sarah graduated with high honors from Swarthmore College with a double major in psychology and English. Now a PhD candidate in clinical psychology at the University of Virginia, her research focuses on adolescent social relationships and how relationships impact adolescent well-being. She has been published four times in psychological journals and presented at five psychological conferences.

"When I started tutoring, I had no idea that it would become something I loved as much as I do," Sarah says. "But I realized it was an ideal job for me, as it combines two of my greatest interests--children and adolescents, and learning." In her clinical psychology work, one of Sarah's main interests is enhancing adolescents' self-esteem and confidence. "Largely because of this," she says, "I get great satisfaction from seeing students' scores, skills, and self-image simultaneously increase. A former athlete, I also love the teamwork involved in tutoring--working collaboratively toward a common goal and identifying strategies and tricks."

Sarah has been tutoring for twelve years, working with all ages from second grade to college, both in person and online, in both group and individual settings. She has tutored English (grammar, writing, and reading comprehension), elementary and middle-school math, Spanish, and test prep--including the SAT, the ACT, and the GRE. She also has experience editing college application essays. For two summers, she created and independently led a creative-writing workshop for elementary-school children. Currently, Sarah is teaching small in-person SAT tutoring, as well as teaching labs and small classes at the college level.

Over the years, Sarah says, she has acquired insight and techniques that have strengthened her teaching abilities. One experience that stood out was a program she helped run in college that focused on instilling confidence and teaching coping mechanisms to help middle-school girls navigate adolescence. "This experience exposed me to even more ways to adhere to individuals' needs and approach situations with sensitivity and guidance," Sarah says. She describes herself as "warm and supportive" and is proud of her ability to make things that seem challenging readily understandable.

In high school, Sarah played basketball for two years and was captain of the softball and cross-country teams. In college, she played varsity softball. She still loves playing and watching sports--she is an especially big New York Yankees fan! She enjoys being outdoors and values time with friends and family. She loves to read and write, especially creative writing, and has written two novels. She says, "I dream of having them published some day!"
