PrepNow Tutor - Arvind S.
Empathetic and open minded, Arvind is a graduate student studying mechanical engineering. He enjoys meeting new people and learning about different cultures. After scoring in the top 1% of the Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced—the entrance exam for India’s engineering schools—Arvind chose to attend the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He was a Young Scientist Incentive Plan Fellow due to his proficiency in STEM subjects and his aptitude for research. While earning his undergrad, Arvind performed a variety of research projects and did a number of internships related to manufacturing and machine learning. He graduated with a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. Arvind is currently attending Georgia Institute of Technology to earn his master's in mechanical engineering.
As a high school student, Arvind began tutoring underclassmen in order to prepare for the competitive Indian entrance exams. He tutored everything from algebra and geometry to trigonometry and AP calculus. Outside of mathematics, he also tutored chemistry and physics. The experience built his confidence in his communication skills as a teacher. Arvind later served as a teaching assistant for an engineering heat transfer class. This range of skill levels has made him adept at both the building blocks of STEM subjects and the minutiae of more advanced courses.
Arvind describes his teaching style as “interactive and rigorous.” He credits both “experiences with great teachers and time spent with subjects” for this approach. In addition to his deep subject knowledge, Arvind finds connecting with students to be a helpful tool. He likes to engage students by connecting the subject matter to their interests. “Nudging the student to think in the right direction and figure it out for themselves is effective in my experience,” he explains. The aforementioned rigor is intended to make standardized exams less intimidating. Arvind uses a combination of “discipline in practicing different types of questions” and “consistently refreshing concepts, ideas, and strategies” to make the exam familiar.
A music aficionado, Arvind loves Indian classical music in addition to rock music. He enjoys staying active and often hikes, runs long distances, and plays tennis. Arvind is a fan of crime thriller novels and always picks one up before a long flight or a vacation. He has recently become interested in Formula 1 racing, international relations, and investing.
