PrepNow Tutor - Brian W.
A test prep and academic tutor since 2019, Brian meets his students where they are and helps build their confidence. After graduating from Boston University with a BA in philosophy, Brian worked in college textbook publishing for over 30 years, predominantly as an editor in US history. “Working with college professors taught me the goals and challenges inherent to college academics,” Brian reflects. As a tutor, Brian finds it deeply rewarding to work and connect with his students on new skills and subjects.
Brian started tutoring because of his passion for education and his desire to have a more direct role with students. He has worked with fifth through twelfth-grade students on the HSAT, ACT, ISEE Middle and Upper, and SSAT Middle and Upper; he has also tutored English and US history subjects. He has extensive experience mentoring students with learning challenges, including ADHD, dyslexia, and autism.
When tutoring, Brian creates a safe space where students can build confidence to explore a topic and understand that mistakes are a part of the learning process. “I take the time to discuss ways for each student to perform better on academic assessments, whether standardized tests, school tests, or writing assignments,” Brian says. “Test anxiety is a natural process, especially for one of the major admissions tests, and I like to help students overcome the emotional challenges of a test so they can focus on maximizing their performance.”
As a student, Brian played baseball and participated in debate. He was elected Editor of the Year at his publishing company twice. Brian enjoys reading, movies, flying, and sports. “I have been to all 50 states,” he shares.
