While Fareeda only recently graduated college, she is both accomplished and possessed of a wide-range of experiences in and out of the classroom. “Good teachers have been instrumental to making me who I am today, which is why I pursue teaching and tutoring in any capacity I can—to give back to students like the one I once was,” she says. Fareeda attended the honors college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was one of the inaugural recipients of the Golson Family Scholarship—a full-ride, four-year scholarship. Fareeda studied neuroscience and double-minored in medical anthropology and entrepreneurship. In fact, she received the Pat Conway Spirit Award—a program that recognizes a small number of seniors for their timeless entrepreneurial spirit and initiative. She was also a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta and Nu Rho Psi, the pre-health honor society and the neuroscience honor society.
Additionally, Fareeda participated in multiple travel study programs. The first was via an honors travel award that allowed Fareeda to study innovation and technology in Silicon Valley. She was then a Gilman Scholar with the US Department of State where she spent a summer in Czechia teaching elementary-aged Ukrainian children English and science. Fareeda counts that summer as one of her most cherished teaching experiences because the language barrier was a challenge, yet her students finished the course with dramatically improved communication skills. Later that year, she spent five months as a Phillips Ambassador studying in Singapore. After graduation, she participated in another study abroad program—this time in Ecuador with the Regeneration Field Institute. This international nonprofit is focused on regenerative agriculture and agroforestry practices, mainly in South America. Fareeda recently moved back home to Texas and has spent her time volunteering and tutoring.
Fareeda began tutoring as a freshman when her biology professor asked her to be a TA. She served as a learning assistant for biology, neuropsychopharmacology, and chemistry through her undergraduate years. In addition to tutoring college students, Fareeda was a student teaching lead in a student run organization at UNC where they volunteered at a local elementary school teaching primarily natural science concepts. While Fareeda has taught the gamut of academic subjects, she is also well versed in standardized testing.
“My primary philosophy is ‘never ask, never learn’ and it refers to my personal opinion that asking questions is paramount to learning,” Fareeda says. She explains that “the very content of the question shows what is misunderstood, can help correct previous misconceptions, all while answering the topic at hand.” Her teaching style is very interactive so she intentionally builds in opportunities for students to respond and interact with the lesson. “I think it is a great way to get a sense of exactly how students learn each topic and concept.”
Fareeda was an All-State Varsity wrestler in high school and was a member of the wrestling and jiu-jitsu clubs in college. In high school, she was part of just about every national honor society from science and English to the technical honor society and Mu Alpha Theta, the mathematics honor society. She was also a national speech and debate All-American. In college, Fareeda became involved in the African Student Association as well as various healthcare and mental health groups. Outside of school, Fareeda enjoys physical activity like swimming, hiking, biking, and martial arts. She likes reading and writing poetry as well as reading in general.
