PrepNow Tutor - Emma K.
A test prep tutor with a background in English literature, law, and library science, Emma has spent the past four years teaching legal research to 1L law students. “I love working with students one-on-one and tailoring my approaches to best fit their needs,” she says. Emma holds a BA in art history and English literature from Agnes Scott College as well as a JD and MS in library science from Indiana University.
Before Emma attended law school, she was in a provisional certification program, training to be a middle school teacher. “This period is when I gained a lot of experience working one-on-one with students in grades 6-12, especially on math,” she reflects. “I think my own past struggles with math as a child make me a really good tutor for students for whom math does not come naturally.” Throughout this time, Emma worked as a special education paraprofessional and both a test prep and a subject tutor.
Emma’s tutoring style is student-centered with a focus on metacognition. “I work to understand how a student approaches problem solving and help them figure out how that natural disposition and process can be applied to academics that they might find frustrating,” she explains. “I am always interested in how a student got to the answer they did, even if it is wrong, or not quite right, because that informs how I help them get to a more complete understanding.”
In high school, Emma was on the color guard team. In law school, she was an Associate and then Articles Editor for the Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality. Outside of work, she enjoys visiting museums, studying Italian, watching old movies, and finding new books to recommend. “I grew up in a town where everyone drove a golf cart, and my high school had a golf cart parking lot,” Emma shares.
