PrepNow Tutor - Bruton S.
Self-proclaimed math and science nerd, Bruton has experience tutoring English and math, particularly reading, writing, algebra, geometry, and calculus, often geared toward SAT, ACT, and AP test prep. Having worked as a collegiate grader for classes on proofs and as a teaching assistant for classes on artificial intelligence, computability & complexity, and real analysis allowed Bruton to finesse his communication-forward approach.
Bruton completed a dual degree at the University of Vermont: a BS in mathematics and a BA in computer science. As of 2026, he’s pursuing his master’s in applied mathematics at Northeastern University.
Bruton began tutoring in high school at his English teacher’s suggestion and never stopped seeking out opportunities. “It's incredibly rewarding to see a student suddenly understand a question they couldn't answer before, and seeing the improvement from the beginning of a semester to the end makes me feel like I'm truly making them a better thinker,” he reflects.
Student-tutor communication is key to Bruton’s approach. “When a student gets a question wrong, it's often because of a mismatch between the teacher's explanation and the student's understanding; good tutoring involves walking through a problem and seeing where that mismatch lies, not just showing the correct answer,” he explains. He emphasizes critical thinking skills like breaking down questions step by step and investigating mistakes. “By helping students find and fix their own misunderstandings, I can help them apply what they know to types of questions they haven't seen before, making them more confident and capable problem-solvers,” he concludes.
As a student, he was a staple on the honor roll and dean’s list. In college, he was on the chess team. From 2022 to 2023, he worked as a chess teacher and tournament director at the Vermont Youth Chess Day events hosted by Senator Bernie Sanders.
These days, he still loves playing chess. He’s also an avid reader, baseball fan, and, more recently, has “rekindled a childhood love of Legos,” he adds.
