Emily has taught special education in person, online, and in one-on-one settings since 2018. She has a bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg University, where she was a dual major in early childhood education and special education. She also earned a master's in special education from Grand Canyon University.
"I have always loved education," says Emily. "Even when I didn't enjoy a class, I made a game for myself out of assignments. Being undiagnosed with ADHD and vision problems until later in life, I developed strategies to support learning and focus in school," she shares. In addition to teaching middle and high school special education, Emily has experience with curriculum interventions, grade-level materials, executive functioning skills, and student services. "I also worked with my students in their self-advocacy in the classroom," she adds.
As to her teaching philosophy, Emily creates learning tools specific to each student. She understands that each child is different, with their own learning styles and experiences. "I strive to build study tools, test-taking strategies, and explain how to break down large tasks into manageable steps," she says. "To do so, I do my best to build rapport with each student." At times, learning can feel challenging and daunting to students, but Emily has seen that by developing a good rapport, students feel more comfortable taking risks and learning from mistakes rather than seeing them as failures.
As an undergraduate, Emily was on the dean's list all four years. At one of her teaching jobs, she was also Content Lead of Special Education at the school. "In this role, I supported professional development trainings for special education teachers and worked directly with the director of special education," she shares.
When in school, Emily was in Girl Scouts, was a competitive dancer, and played soccer. She was also in Bloomsburg University Equality Alliance and "I Am That Girl."
Currently, Emily is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. "I have found an amazing community among the other adults and built a strong community for my family. Jiu-Jitsu builds strength, problem-solving, and confidence."
At home, Emily enjoys reading and trying new things with her family. "I have two step kids and two biological kids," she says. "We enjoy building, finding science experiments, and crafts."
Fun fact: Emily used to be an archery instructor and is yoga certified.
