“I am passionate about helping students and encouraging others to learn new things and get the most out of their education,” Ava says. She holds a BS in biomedical engineering with a minor in cinematic arts from the University of Southern California. Ava is currently tutoring while she takes a gap year as she prepares for grad school.
Ava started tutoring during high school by tutoring a kindergarten student in reading. Since then, she’s tutored students ranging from middle to high school in math and SAT/ACT prep. “My proudest moment was seeing one of my students achieve their goal ACT score, because I saw how much their hard work and perseverance paid off,” Ava says. In addition to test prep, she has experience tutoring in algebra 1 & 2, pre-calculus, and trigonometry.
“My tutoring style is first assessing where a student feels confident and what strategies they are using to problem solve,” Ava says, adding that she next typically reviews a practice test or worksheet with the student and they work through the problems they are struggling with together. “I believe in asking a student questions first so they get used to figuring out problems on their own to the best of their ability, so that they can accurately pinpoint their weaknesses and ask for specified help,” she explains. “Then I will walk them through how to solve the problem and different test strategies they can use. This ensures the student feels empowered and that they are making visible progress.”
During high school, Ava danced competitively in several styles, from ballet to jazz to contemporary and more. In college, she was the recipient of the Presidential Merit Scholar and Grand Challenge Scholar and on three dance teams, dancing at home men’s and women’s basketball games and putting on showcases for friends and family.
In her free time, she loves to read and watch movies and TV. She’s also learning to play the electric guitar and loves to cook. “I'm very outgoing and love to travel, learn new things, and meet new people,” Ava says. Ava studied abroad in London for six months.
