PrepNow Tutor - Emily O.
A motivated and caring school psychologist, Emily has experience supporting young people in their growth and development across multiple domains. She holds two degrees: a BA from Gustavus Adolphus College, where she graduated summa cum laude with honors in psychological science: gender, women, sexuality studies; and an EdS in education and psychological services from the University of Minnesota. After earning her BA, Emily worked in a psychology research lab at the University of Minnesota. Since completing her graduate training, Emily has been working as a school psychologist. “In this role, I work with students and families to identify appropriate supports to help students develop their academic and social-emotional skills,” Emily shares. “I also conduct evaluations for special education, lead student small groups, work 1:1 with students to develop specific skills, and collaborate with teacher teams to optimize student support and growth.”
Emily was inspired to become an educator in order to use her research and empathy to support adolescents as they develop their academic and social-emotional skills. “Specifically, I wanted to be a strong advocate for young people, with various strengths and needs, to help them grow and achieve their goals,” Emily says. Throughout her career, Emily has tutored in reading comprehension, reading fluency, written expression, executive functioning, math calculation, math problem-solving, algebra, geometry, and statistics. She has extensive experience working with students with various abilities and needs, and has been specially trained to support students with learning disabilities.
“I approach tutoring and support for students with empathy and care matched with high expectations and empowerment,” Emily says. “I work to help students feel supported to learn and grow, and help them identify their own potential. To this end, I aim to create a welcoming and understanding tutoring environment, explicitly teach needed skills, and then give students meaningful opportunities to practice. I believe all students are capable of learning and growing with the right supports.”
As a student, Emily played soccer and participated in track and cross-country skiing. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, playing soccer, painting, and spending time with my family and friends. “I was born and raised in Minneapolis and love to walk around the lakes, visit local restaurants, and go to concerts,” Emily shares. “During the summer, I enjoy camping in the Boundary Waters and visiting the north shore.” Emily once played on a German soccer team in Berlin and scored a game-winning goal.
