Cybersecurity professional Kathleen appreciates creative approaches to problem solving. She has always loved to learn and she “loves to help students gain that same appreciation.” Kathleen attended Illinois Institute of Technology where she earned both her bachelor’s in computer and cybersecurity engineering and her master’s in cybersecurity engineering.
As a high school student, Kathleen was a member of the national Honor Society, which is where she first started tutoring. She was most proud when a student suddenly understood something that had previously been elusive to them. Much of her experience as a tutor focuses on computer science—programming, algorithms, data structures—as well as web development and machine learning tailored to middle and high school-aged students. That said, Kathleen is also well-versed in K-12 mathematics tutoring. She has taught both one-on-one and small groups of students in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, statistics, calculus I-III, differential equations, and discrete mathematics.
“I understand there is an endless list of reasons why a student may be struggling,” Kathleen says. In order for the student to make academic progress, “I believe it is important to address the root of the issue, instead of trying to force the student through the process.” In short, she says “I always try to meet students where they are.”
In addition to National Honor Society, Kathleen was also involved in a wide variety of activities as a student. She played both flag football and rugby. Kathleen was also involved in mock trial and model UN. These days, she is drawn to projects “that intersect creativity with logic.” Whether that is crocheting, playing sudoku, or baking—cinnamon rolls are her favorite treat to bake. She also loves to spend time outdoors. She enjoys hiking and gardening. This year, she’s added lettuce and spinach to her herb garden.
