Jennifer has been teaching middle, high, and college-level maths since 2003 and tutoring math since 1994. She earned three degrees: a BS in mathematics from Mercer University, an MAT in secondary mathematics from Georgia College & State University, and an EdS in teacher leadership from Mercer University. Over the years, Jennifer has worked with students of various backgrounds and ages; she has also acted as a department chair and instructional coach, and she currently teaches middle school online.
Jennifer has been tutoring since she was in middle school, when she tutored physics as part of community service hours for the National Honor Society. She later tutored college students when she was in dual-enrollment courses—they thought she was a junior in college and were shocked to learn she was still in high school!
"My philosophy is that students who need help can focus on the hardest or weirdest problems while meeting with me, and that allows students to tackle mundane work independently," she says. "I use repetition to build confidence while gradually increasing difficulty along the way." She starts by finding out what a student knows and builds skills and knowledge from there. She teaches content directly when needed and makes a point to build larger connections to ensure contextual understanding and long-term learning. "That makes the learning feel easy and manageable," she says.
Jennifer has a wealth of experience working with students with learning differences like dysgraphia, ADHD, and anxiety. She tailors tutoring sessions to each student's needs and sets realistic goals with students and parents. Over the course of her decades-long career, she has taught 6th-8th-grade math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, AP calculus, graph theory, logic, problem solving, and math in 2D/3D/4D art. She has also tutored SAT preparation.
Jennifer earned several accolades as a student: she was an honors student, graduating summa cum laude; she received the ETS Recognition of Excellence Award for Top 15% of Praxis scores in Mathematics; and she was a Georgia Governor's Honors Program Instructor.
As a student, Jennifer was involved in track & field, softball, the academic team, and volunteer work. Currently, she enjoys water sports like kayaking, swimming, and sailing. "I also like to sit on the porch swing and watch the birds eat in the feeders in the yard," she adds.
Jennifer enjoys traveling and cruises when she can be away for longer periods. She has volunteered with the Fuller Center for Housing by raising money through the Bike Adventure and by joining building projects.
Fun fact: "I walked across Spain from St Jean Pied de Port to Finisterre on the Camino de Santiago."
