PrepNow Tutor - Hailey N.
Hailey specializes in STEM topics, particularly physics and algebra. Having held several roles in education, she strives to foster confident, successful lifelong learning. She earned a bachelor’s in physics education from Gustavus Adolphus College, a master’s in educational leadership from Saint Mary's University, and an education specialist certification from Minnesota State University Moorhead.
Since graduating, she has taught 9th-grade physics and AP Physics I. She also served as the academy lead for her group of teachers for two years, was a member of the building leadership team, and acted as a multi-tiered "system of supports" coordinator, a role in which she created and matched students with reading, math, social-emotional, and executive functioning interventions. Additionally, her experiences as a learning, teaching, and equity coach have given her insight into effective communication and instruction methods to support students both in and out of the classroom.
Hailey began tutoring in college. “I worked with kids before as a camp counselor, daycare provider, and babysitter, so I knew that I loved helping others and was also in a teaching program. My proudest moments tutoring and teaching always come from having students realize that they can do it and that they are capable of more than they let themselves believe,” she expresses.
Her teaching style is based on investigation, discussion, and connections. “We need to investigate how things connect, and be able to investigate where students lose their understanding and why,” she explains. Studying how her students process and apply new information helps her adapt to fit their needs. “We also need to build spaces where students can feel comfortable discussing their understandings and areas of confusion,” she adds. Lastly, she believes that strong, authentic relationships with her students are essential to building capable, confident humans, not just academics. “Connections with students and classroom communities build trust and a positive rapport that lets students know that we are here to help them in the journey of learning.”
Her stellar GPA earned her a spot on the President’s Honors List at Gustavus Adolphus. She was also part of the Sigma Pi Sigma National Physics Honor Society and was awarded the Julian A. Crawford Memorial Physics Award, given to the student with “the greatest potential for contributing to physics and society.” As a student, she volunteered at her Church’s Sunday school and was a volunteer counselor.
These days, she enjoys hiking, camping, and volunteering with equity organizations. “I have a passion for engaging in my communities and seeing the beauty in the world around me,” she shares. She also likes to relax by painting with watercolors. “Watercolor is a peaceful activity that helps me unwind at the end of the day.”
