PrepNow Tutor - Joey R.
An engaging tutor, Joey holds a BA in English with a double minor in creative writing and psychology from Rosemont College. Since graduating, he’s worked in the AI-industry, written for a few small magazines, and submitted poetry and short stories to a large number of writing competitions. Currently, in addition to tutoring, Joey is writing a fantasy book series and a poetry collection themed on Greek mythology, as well as working part-time at his local mall.
Joey started teaching as a peer tutor in high school. “When I started tutoring, I was mostly helping students in my class or the year before me with concepts they were struggling with,” Joey recalls. “Oftentimes they were confused with steps in the process, or having difficulty seeing how to set up problems, or why systems and formulas worked the way they did.” One of Joey’s favorite early moments in tutoring was helping a student understand the proofs for angles and sides that they were learning in geometry. Since 2016, Joey has tutored an extensive number of high school subjects, including English literature, writing, algebra I & II, geometry, pre-calculus, and basic college math.
“My focus when tutoring is maintaining a student-led approach,” Joey explains. “I have students explain their decisions in answers and what they understand from the start—to help clarify how they process questions and what information they find most important in the questions—and then we expand from there.” Joey believes that collaborative work is a critical component of successful tutoring. “How a tutor guides a student through the steps of a question is much more important than just lecturing the student,” he says.
In high school, Joey participated in the Academic Team, Model U.N., Dungeons and Dragons, Interact Club, student council, drama club, and acapella. In college, he was president of the Dungeons and Dragons club, played for the men's volleyball team, was in the student council, and was a volunteer and organizer for some of his school's chapel events. Joey received the Good Citizenship Award from the Philadelphia Union League for his volunteer and community work that he completed during his last year of Boy Scouts, the Martin Luther King Jr. Poetry Award from Rosemont College, and the Iris N. Spencer Undergraduate Poetry Award. Outside of work, Joey plays games with his friends and writes poetry and video game reviews for underground indie games, usually while enjoying a warm drink. “I'm a huge fan of storytelling and acting, from movies and books, to roleplaying games and skits people make on social media. I have a huge love for music, but I can't play any instruments.”
