PrepNow Tutor - Yasmin K.
A curious tutor, Yasmin is always looking for ways to incorporate creativity into her life, whether through dance, teaching methods, or researching new topics. She earned her BA summa cum laude in environmental studies and Chinese language and culture from Wellesley College. After graduating, Yasmin worked with Pano Education in Taipei, Taiwan, through the VELD Fellowship, advising students through the college application process and tutoring SAT and academic subjects while studying Mandarin at National Taiwan Normal University. Since returning to the US, she has continued tutoring while working with a local business as a production and sales associate and pursuing professional performing arts work throughout the Chicago area.
Yasmin’s tutoring experience goes back to high school, when she volunteered as a peer tutor during her free periods. She later taught circus arts through her first job as a Circus Camp counselor, and her interest in teaching grew from there. During college, she worked as a peer tutor in the Chinese department, and this led to her role as a tutor at Pano Education. “Having grown up as a quiet, introverted student myself, I now seek to create a welcoming and supportive environment in the classroom so students can feel comfortable participating on their own terms,” Yasmin says. Yasmin has tutored all sections of the SAT in both group and one-on-one lessons. She’s also tutored the SSAT, ISEE, Mandarin, college essay writing, arithmetic, algebra 1 and 2, geometry, and trigonometry; she has excelled in math herself up to multivariable calculus and biostatistics. In addition to tutoring, Yasmin has taught AP Human Geography, high school and middle school English literature, AP Microeconomics, and ESL.
“I would describe my tutoring style as supportive and facilitative,” Yasmin says. “I aim to guide students by asking questions and encouraging critical thinking, which allows them to solve problems and come to conclusions on their own.” Throughout lessons, Yasmin observes students' learning styles and preferences and thus tailors her strategies accordingly, allowing students to participate in ways that feel most comfortable to them. “I hope to foster independence and self-confidence through my teaching, helping students develop intrinsic motivation and enjoyment throughout the learning process,” Yasmin explains. Yasmin’s students have gained admission to top colleges and universities, including Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, Wellesley College, NYU, and Emory University, among others.
In high school, Yasmin danced with Auroris Dance Company, participated in the Chinese Club, volunteered with shelter cats, competed in Filipino cultural dance, was inducted into the National Honor Society, and received her school’s award of Academic Excellence in Mandarin Chinese. Trained in classical ballet and circus arts, throughout college, she performed modern, contemporary, and hip hop dance with Wellesley College Dancers and Wellesley College Freestyle. She also participated in the Filipinx cultural organization, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and volunteered with kindergarten students through Boston's Chinatown Afterschool Program.
In addition to her work in education, Yasmin is a modern dancer with THWACK Dance and recently performed in a devised physical theater production in Chicago’s Rhinoceros Theater Festival. “I am very active and love hobbies that involve movement,” Yasmin shares. “I am currently learning figure skating and have been doing acroyoga and aerial silks for several years. I also enjoy reading, baking, spending time outside, and exploring cafes around the city.”
