PrepNow Tutor - Tommy N.
Tommy specializes in English and math and has worked with students K-12, including those with developmental differences and learning challenges like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. He’s adept at helping students build strong foundational skills and develop efficient test-taking strategies, particularly for ACT and SAT English and math.
He earned a BA in English from Georgia State University Honors College; since graduating, he worked in the mortgage field before pivoting to private tutoring with a learning center that caters to struggling students in reading and math. In addition to tutoring, he’s currently an assistant teacher in public schools with Applerouth Education and Fulton County Public Schools.
One of his proudest teaching moments involved an 8th grader who often displayed distracting, rebellious behavior in the classroom. “If I tried to prompt the student towards the class, the behavioral displays flared. As such, instead of reprimanding the student, I instead decided to focus generally on the friends/classmates at her table, one-on-one. I did ‘I do, We do, You do’ teaching with each of their friends, and once it was the student's turn, it was no longer ‘Me and Friends vs. Teacher,’ it was ‘Me vs. Friends and Teachers.’”
Tommy’s approach stems from several years of experience working with students of various backgrounds and levels. “For high school level students, I maintain a calmer, relaxed style that guides students as they need it, as many high school level students do not want to be looked down upon. For middle school level students, I maintain a more upbeat and fun attitude, with games, motivators, and ways to transition students back into doing their necessary work,” he explains. His main goal is to help students develop agency and independence with their learning habits.
Aside from tutoring and nerding out, he enjoys running. Fun fact: He is two degrees of separation from notable voice actor Patrick Warburton, “the voice of Kronk!”
