PrepNow Tutor - Christina T.
A goal-oriented and empathetic tutor with a passion for education, Christina loves learning new things and strives to create learning spaces that allow her students to reach their full potential. She holds a BA in political science with a focus on public policy from George Washington University and an EdM in education leadership, organizations, and entrepreneurship from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. After graduating from college, Christina joined Teach For America and taught writing at a public charter school, advancing with the same cohort for seven years and teaching ELA across grades 6-12. During her year-long graduate program, she served as a Principal Fellow at two public schools in Boston and worked as a college application advisor. Christina has been working as a middle school assistant principal since 2023.
“I have always had a passion for teaching, tutoring, and mentoring,” Christina says. She became involved in tutoring through volunteer work with Big Brothers Big Sisters while in high school, working closely with her mentee on both academic and social skills. “I continued to do this work in college as a tutor with Turning the Page, an organization that provided literacy support to students while simultaneously engaging families in community events and learning opportunities,” Christina says. She eventually expanded her work to test prep tutoring. Christina’s proudest moment as a tutor was when she mentored one of her students through the entire college application process. “After months of refining their personal statement, completing test prep practice, and perfecting their Common App, it was great to see the joy on their face when they were accepted to their top choice school,” Christina reflects.
As a tutor, Christina is collaborative and reflective. “I try my best to tailor my tutoring style to the needs of each student that I support,” Christina explains. “I believe that students are the ones who should be doing the heavy lifting and that my work as the tutor is more of a guide. I like to model my thought process on completing certain problems and provide students with steps or strategies that they can apply to multiple types of questions.” Christina believes that students learn best when they have plenty of opportunities to practice and are able to receive targeted and specific feedback on what went well and where they can grow. “When it comes to test prep in particular, it is important to teach students both the content and the strategies needed to be successful,” she says.
In high school, Christina participated in speech and debate, student government, junior leadership club, tennis team, and cross-country team. In college, she was a tutor, a Reading Partners volunteer, vice president of Pi Beta Phi, Freshman Day of Service leader, and a community building leader.
Christina earned the Advanced Teacher designation, the highest rating in YES Prep Public Schools’ evaluation system, and was also named an Exemplary Teacher through the Texas Teacher Incentive Allotment based on student performance on the statewide STAAR exam. Christina loves to read, cook new recipes, visit national parks, and run marathons. “I have a goal of completing all seven world major marathons (3 done, 4 to go) and hope to visit all US national parks in my lifetime!”
