PrepNow Tutor - Carson Y.
Carson says he knew he wanted to be a teacher even before college. As to his education, he holds a BS in biochemistry from the University of Houston. He began tutoring in 2017 while an undergraduate, assisting peers in organic chemistry. Following his graduation, he worked for years as a high school teacher, gaining classroom experience in biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science; he also garnered tutoring experience in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. Carson has also taught K-12 students online for a major educational company. He comes to StudyPoint excited to harness his skills and experience for test-prep students.
Carson believes in building connections with students and working with them until they become agents of their own education. First, he posits, he must help students adapt learning to their own experiences. As one example, if students seem disinterested in learning a physics concept, Carson might create a discussion of the physics involved in a fight between superheroes or Pokemon characters. If a student does not feel empowered, Carson might invite that student to try to stump Carson with their understanding of the material. In short, he resorts to any form of engagement to help students become part of their own processes.
Next, once he has captured students’ attention, he helps them develop key attributes. His ultimate goal is to become almost irrelevant. He says, “Retention grows as one listens, reads, writes, and practices; the more I can help students polish such skills, the more they will gain the ability to become teachers for themselves and others.” Once they have achieved this sense of independence and confidence, Carson feels he has done his job and is happy to congratulate his students as they leave his mentorship.
In his off hours, Carson still likes to exert a positive social influence. To wit, he is the president-elect of Sugar Speakers Toastmasters, where he helps people learn how to become better public speakers. He believes that effective rhetoric offers one the chance to change minds and even lives. With those same goals in mind, Carson also works as a mental health coach, offering counsel and comfort to those in need. Finally, perhaps just to brighten the day of anyone in earshot, Carson plays the piano and likes to belt out Sinatra standards.
