PrepNow Tutor - Mauricio M.
Mauricio has several years of experience working with students in courses such as calculus I, pre-calculus, geometry, algebra I & II (through college level), quantitative reasoning, math for business, and economics. He has also helped college-bound seniors boost their SAT and ACT math scores. “Many of my students entered tutoring while struggling or at risk of failing and improved to consistent passing or B+ performance through structured, concept-focused instruction,” he shares.
Mauricio earned a BBA in economics from St. Edward's University, where he tutored in the math lab at the suggestion of his teachers, who noted his mathematical-minded excellence. “Ever since then, my proudest moments have always revolved around lending a hand to students who are nervous about failing/dropping a math class and growing both their confidence and math skills to come for the rebound!”
After a career in banking, he returned to education to “have a direct impact on students and feel fulfilled about helping them succeed.” In addition to tutoring, he has also worked as an upper-level math instructor at a learning center.
Mauricio’s structured, proactive approach is great for students who need confidence-building and skill development. He's adept at working with students who experience ADHD, test anxiety, or math avoidance. “My teaching style is both conceptual and highly structured, helping students understand underlying ideas while applying clear, repeatable problem-solving methods,” he explains. “This approach helps students who struggle with attention experience early wins, which increases confidence and willingness to engage.” His approach to test prep balances content mastery with strategy, and he's proud to share that one student in particular experienced a substantial score jump after working with Mauricio.
As a student, his academic prowess earned him the President's Distinguished Scholarship, the highest academic scholarship offered at St. Edward’s University. He also sang in the choir and played volleyball.
These days, he loves spending time with family and friends, rock climbing, doing yoga, cooking, and playing music. “I can play guitar behind my back!”
