PrepNow Tutor - Matthew K.
Matthew is a motivated and analytical person who enjoys learning, problem-solving, and helping others grow academically. Outside of work, he’s grounded, easygoing, and someone who values meaningful relationships and continuous improvement. Matthew graduated summa cum laude from Emory University with degrees in both biology and neuroscience. After graduation, he worked as a stem cell research biologist at Emory. He is currently pursuing a pre-dentistry pathway, preparing for dental school and exploring opportunities in the field of oral health.
While in high school, Matthew realized how much he enjoyed explaining concepts to his peers. As a result, he began working at a local tutoring center. “What I love most about tutoring is watching students grow more confident and realize they’re capable of much more than they originally believed,” he explains. In fact, his proudest moment as a tutor is helping a student raise his score an astronomical amount! The student went from feeling hopeless to gaining admission to his top-choice university. “That transformation reminded me how powerful good guidance, encouragement, and consistent strategy can be,” he says.
“I’ve worked with students across a wide range of subjects—including math, reading, test prep, and essay writing—and have developed a strong reputation for helping students achieve significant score improvements and write compelling application essays.” Matthew has experience teaching students from 6th-12th grade. He has tutored students in all manner of test prep including SAT, ACT, PSAT, SSAT, and ISEE, covering areas such as algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, grammar, reading comprehension, and data interpretation. He says of the experience, “it has strengthened my communication, patience, and ability to explain complex concepts clearly.”
As a tutor, Matthew is clear, organized, and patient. He begins by “understanding where a student is starting from, identifying their gaps, and building their skills step-by-step with targeted practice and strategic feedback.” Matthew is a strong mathematics tutor because he brings “a deep understanding of mathematical concepts with the ability to break them down into simple, intuitive explanations.” He focuses on “teaching students how to recognize patterns, eliminate wrong answers efficiently, and manage their pacing—tools that consistently lead to higher scores.” This approach balances “clarity, strategy, and confidence-building to ensure students see measurable improvement.”
As a high school student, Matthew was a member of debate, student leadership, and a math and science academic team. He also took up long distance running recreationally. He still enjoys running in addition to working out and finding new ways to stay active. Matthew also enjoys exploring new restaurants and spending time outdoors. “I like journaling and reading when I want to unwind, and I love exploring new hobbies—whether it’s cooking something different, going on a weekend trip, or learning a new skill.”
