PrepNow Tutor - Alexis P.
Alexis began her educational career in 2014 as a tutor for AVID, an academic organization dedicated to encouraging new avenues of instruction and expanding opportunities for a diverse array of students. The student-centered approach that AVID supports has markedly influenced Alexis on her path as an educator. Building on her start with AVID and having earned her BS in general studies from Texas A&M University, Commerce, Alexis worked for years as a paraprofessional in special education classrooms. There, she worked closely with certified teachers to implement individualized educational plans (IEPs) and to assist students with academic, behavioral, and physical needs. Largely, she says, her role was to promote student independence, inclusion, and success in the classroom.
Following that role, Alexis has taken subsequent positions as a long-term high school mathematics substitute teacher and as a special education teacher at a nonprofit organization. Ultimately, though, she decided that she could best serve her family and students by operating largely as a private tutor. In that vein, Alexis has worked with students in K-12, tutoring in almost every subject area. Specifically, she touts extensive mathematics-related experience, having tutored in arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics.
Alexis defines her tutoring style as an unfolding journey, one rooted in empathy, flexibility, and the belief that all learners are capable when given the right environment and support. She adds, “I view education as an unfolding journey—one that nurtures identity, purpose, and growth rather than simply delivering content.” At the same time, Alexis expects equal buy-in from her students. She explains, “Anyone can be a student, but it takes dedication and determination to be a learner.” She believes that by creating spaces where students feel safe, seen, and inspired to become who they are meant to be, she helps them to build the determination and will to help themselves.
Outside of work, Alexis likes creative experiences that connect her to the world. For example, she loves to paint and sees art as a means to express emotion and explore form without rules. In addition, she also enjoys self-expression through cooking, especially when she gets to cook for others. Finally, Alexis expresses her artistry through karaoke: on any free night, one might find her singing her heart out and soaking in the cheers of the crowd. All these hobbies, she says, help keep her balanced and inspired.
