PrepNow Tutor - Cyrus L.

An expressive and creative tutor, Cyrus recently earned their BA in studio art with minors in film/media studies and the foundations of AI from Agnes Scott College. “As a newly graduated college student, I am excited to begin my tutoring work!” In addition to tutoring test prep, Cyrus is currently developing a tattoo portfolio with the goal of securing a tattoo-artist apprenticeship.
Growing up, Cyrus was constantly tutoring their younger brother. “When my mom realized I had a knack for teaching, she reached out to her friends and recommended me to their kids as well, and from there I just fell into casual teaching roles throughout high school, eventually leading to interning with Teach For America in college, and now tutoring here,” Cyrus says. Cyrus has tutored AP Calculus, AP Language/Literature, and middle school math, including geometry, equations, inequalities, and algebra. Cyrus is passionate about tutoring test prep because they grew up working through school with clinical anxiety and depression, and understand just how difficult it can be to get through it all; and especially for the SAT/ACT to feel like an additional overwhelming obstacle.
“As someone who grew up neurodivergent, I'm very used to approaching problems from a variety of different angles,” Cyrus explains. “So I like to craft a teaching style that functions complementarily with the student's preferred learning style. It's very important to have that open line of communication between teacher and student in the name of efficient teaching, but also in the name of creating a comfortable and safe environment.” Cyrus always wants it to be clear that they do not exist in a realm above that of their students simply because they are in an assigned teaching position. “It’s also so important to me that a student never feels like they're failing to reach expectations when learning,” Cyrus says. “I always want to emphasize that my only desire is to help them succeed. Their only responsibility is to try, and whatever that may look like for them is perfectly satisfactory. Ultimately, I find curating a relationship with a student—one built on mutual respect and free of judgment—to be the most pivotal part of teaching.”
Cyrus was in choirs starting in elementary school and played tennis on their school's team for a short period during college. They love discussing and analyzing television, movies, musicals, and video games; they also practice a variety of creative endeavors, like drawing, crafting, writing, painting, and cosplaying. Cyrus can solve a Rubik's cube in under two minutes.
“I’m diagnosed with both ADHD and autism, so I also understand what it is like to have to organize information in ways other people might not understand. I also identify as someone in the LGBTQ+ community, and I know in Georgia, especially in our current political climate, it might mean a lot to a queer student to see a queer tutor,” Cyrus shares.
