PrepNow Tutor - Rene R.

Rene enjoys figuring out how each individual student learns math. “I am very empathetic and will help my students as much as possible,” Rene says. He holds three degrees: a BBA in statistics and operations research from the University of Texas at Austin; a BS in secondary education (with a focus in math and English) from Laredo State University; and an MS in education school counseling from Texas A&M International University. After college, Rene joined the US Peace Corps, where he taught math in West Africa. Upon returning, he worked as a teacher and then a school counselor before retiring. Rene has been tutoring since his retirement.
Rene has been teaching and tutoring since joining the US Peace Corps in 1984. “My proudest moment as a teacher was when a senior thanked me for helping them pass a required state math test when they were a sophomore, after seeing many of her senior friends not graduating because they failed to pass the test,” Rene shares. Throughout his long teaching career, he taught college math, high school math, and middle school math. In retirement, he has taught SAT prep and tutored math. He loves tutoring test prep because he enjoys seeing the marked improvement of students’ scores.
“I like to teach in a visual manner,” Rene says. “However, I do try to find out how my students learn math so I can present it to them the way they learn. I believe all students have their own way of learning math, and it is important for both of us to find out how they learn.” Rene has witnessed many students finally understanding math concepts once they are relaxed and taught in a way that is customized to their learning style.
As a student, Rene was a member of the school band in high school and the Hispanic Business Association in college. He enjoys being active in church activities, including Knights of Columbus and Church Choir. “I am the last of sixteen children,” Rene shares.
