PrepNow Tutor - Ivan M.

Ivan is a scholar of mathematics who learned the value of education from his mother, an educator. Ivan holds a BS in math with a minor in Spanish from Monmouth University, and he is entering a master’s degree program at Villanova University to continue his mathematics training. While at Monmouth, Ivan began to follow his mother’s example, working for years at the university’s Math Learning Center. In that capacity, he tutored students in pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, calculus, calculus in the social sciences, and quantitative reasoning.
Ivan tutors with an accommodating but challenging style. First, he operates with the belief that every student can surpass their own expectations; so it is up to him to assess what students know already and build their confidence on that pre-existing foundation. However, once he has done that, he places more onus on the student to create their own path. He says, “At first, I might hesitate to challenge a student, but as I get to know them, I pick up their habits and get a feeling for how to push them to solve the problem at hand.” He notes that if he has done his job in building the skills, confidence, and expectations of his students, they will inherently be better equipped to excel when he pushes.
In his down time, Ivan remains active but also likes quieter, simpler pleasures. On the active side, he has long been a recreational tennis and soccer player, and he enjoys working out regularly. He was also an active member of the Spanish Honors Society at Monmouth, and he speaks Spanish fluently.
In quieter moments, Ivan likes to just watch TV (especially European soccer matches), spend time in prayer, and talk and visit with friends and family.
