PrepNow Tutor - Carl G.

A patient tutor, Carl holds a BS in geographic information systems (GIS) from the University of Oklahoma and an MS in geography from Texas A&M University. Carl worked as a geographer for the Army Corps of Engineers' Engineering and Research division, specializing in snow and ice research, before transitioning to education and teaching high school science. Currently, in addition to tutoring, Carl is a Senior GIS Analyst for the City of Dallas.
Growing up with a teacher mom, Carl was no stranger to the world of teaching, and education was always a natural progression for him. As a high school teacher, he taught biology, physics, and AP Physics. He loves tutoring test prep because of its multidisciplinary element and his passion for sharing strategies and boosting his students’ confidence. He is also especially effective at breaking down large elements into manageable parts. “Each exam is just one question at a time,” Carl says. “Once you see it as 30, 60, or 100 little pieces, it’s suddenly not so scary.”
Carl’s teaching style is rooted in the belief that students learn best when they feel comfortable. By creating a calming and welcoming environment, especially in subjects that often feel intimidating, he helps his students feel free to take risks, ask questions, and grow. “I want the student to feel comfortable in the space they are in,” Carl says. “Students don't learn when they are in fight-or-flight, so I try to get to the exact opposite of that. Once there, I act as a guide.” With his experience across science and math topics, he brings encouragement and clear guidance to every session. “As a tutor and a teacher, I see myself as the bumpers on a bowling lane, I am there to help them make it to the end, but they have to keep going,” Carl says.
In high school, Carl played volleyball and basketball, and ran track. As an adult, he still plays volleyball and basketball but has swapped track for rugby. He also enjoys video games and concerts. “I enjoy music and getting wrapped up in the crowd and energy,” Carl says. “I am a big fan of science and sports. They are the two things I think the most about each day.”
Carl was awarded the Antarctica Service Medal for his work on a research project in McMurdo Station, Antarctica, issued by the U.S. Department of Defense. He has an adorable little terrier named Sophie.
