A funny and eclectic tutor who loves animals and books, Skyla holds a BS in biology and a BS in chemistry from Auburn University at Montgomery, where she was repeatedly on the dean’s list. After graduating college, she worked as an EMT before transitioning to her current role as a medical assistant while she pursues becoming a nurse educator. “I'm excited to be tutoring and working with students again," Skyla says.
Skyla started tutoring while in college, teaching students in math and English from elementary school to college level, including students with special needs. In math, Skyla has tutored pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, basic arithmetic, pre-calculus, calculus, and trigonometry. She’s excited to tutor test prep in particular because she loves helping students break down complex problems, build confidence, and see real progress in their scores. “Test prep isn’t just about memorization,” Skyla says. “It involves strategy, critical thinking, and learning how to approach questions efficiently. I enjoy teaching students to recognize patterns, eliminate wrong answers, and manage their time effectively.”
Skyla is skilled at adapting explanations to suit different learning styles and reducing test anxiety by reinforcing her students’ strengths and addressing their weaknesses in a supportive manner. “I like to keep a flexible approach when tutoring as I learn about a student and their individual needs,” Skyla says. “I focus on test-taking strategies and pinpointing problem areas in understanding to help correct thought paths in relation to learning material.” Skyla keeps students engaged by targeting conversations intermittently around some of their favorite hobbies. “I believe everyone can learn through practice and hard work,” she says. “Additionally, I genuinely enjoy problem-solving and making learning engaging, which helps students stay focused and improve,” she says.
As a student, Skyla was in choir for her love of music, ROTC for her love of helping others, and did a lot of volunteer work within her community. She loves getting out into nature for hikes and playtime with her husband and their two pups, Honey and Whiskey. She also loves playing video games, reading in her free time, and doing crafts and art projects. “I love collecting unusual cups and mugs,” Skyla shares.
