PrepNow Tutor - Tyann R.

A passionate and creative lifelong learner, Tyann blends the worlds of education and art by amplifying people's stories through teaching, archival work, and research. “As a Queer Afro-Latinx woman, I pride myself on my ability to connect with others and make an impact on those around me,” Tyann says. She holds a BS in education sciences and a BA in ethnic studies from the University of California, San Diego, where she graduated cum laude and was a Provost Honors Recipient and a Black Alumni Scholarship Recipient. Since graduating in 2024, Tyann has been preparing for the GRE and graduate programs in curriculum and instruction and tutoring test prep.
Tyann started tutoring in high school, helping her peers who were struggling in math. More recently, she tutored ESL to high school students through the PAL program, focusing on building foundational language proficiency and confidence in academic communication. “I worked one-on-one and in small groups, emphasizing culturally responsive teaching strategies and peer-centered learning activities,” Tyann says. During the same period, she also provided SAT test prep and academic tutoring through an autism therapy center. “I guided students in critical reading, writing, and math sections, helping them develop test-taking strategies, time management, and content mastery,” Tyann explains. Her math tutoring experience includes algebra and geometry, and she’s skilled at breaking concepts down into manageable steps tailored to individual learning needs, fostering both understanding and retention.
“My teaching style is rooted in Indigenous ways of teaching, which emphasize relational learning, storytelling, and reciprocity,” Tyann says. “I see education as a shared journey, where both teacher and students contribute their knowledge and learn from one another. This approach respects the lived experiences and wisdom each student brings, valuing them as essential parts of the learning process.” Tyann strives to create spaces where knowledge flows naturally, like a conversation, and where learning is tied to identity, culture, and lived experience. “My philosophy is that teaching should be a collaborative and transformative process—one that nurtures curiosity, critical thinking, and a sense of belonging for everyone involved," she says.
In high school, Tyann played volleyball all four years as the team's libero and setter. She was also an active member of her school's LinkCrew club, Black Student Union, AVID, Key Club, and Interact Club. During her senior year, she served as her class's senior class president and founded the first woman empowerment club on campus called the Women of Character Club.
Tyann has a passion for film photography and art in multiple mediums. She enjoys creating, dancing, curating events, and cultivating community. “Whether it's working one-on-one with students or working my magic behind a camera lens, I try to bring authenticity and a deep sense of purpose to everything I do,” Tyann shares.
