PrepNow Tutor - Maria R.
A math and test prep tutor with a strong background in algebra and analytic number theory, Maria holds an MS with distinction in mathematics from the University of Glasgow and a BS magna cum laude with honors in mathematics from the University of Puget Sound. After earning her master’s degree, Maria pursued doctorate degrees at the University of Graz and Graz University of Technology, where she first worked on research involving representations of cluster algebras and cluster categories, and then analytic number theory. Maria has since returned to the United States and is now tutoring test prep.
Maria started tutoring in 2015 after her linear algebra professor connected her with a struggling classmate. “I realized that I enjoyed tutoring and that tutoring others also helped me to understand the material on a deeper level,” Maria recalls. For four years, Maria tutored for the mathematics department, teaching students individually and in small groups on calculus, linear algebra, and computer science, as well as high school algebra, geometry, and AP calculus.
Maria’s tutoring style emphasizes treating her students as equals and collaboratively exploring the material with them. “I focus on guiding students toward discovering answers independently and developing their own understanding of the concepts,” Maria says, explaining that every student learns differently and that they may require various approaches to fully grasp and internalize new ideas.
In high school and college, Maria was involved in orchestra, choir, show choir, and undergraduate summer research programs; also, as an undergraduate, she received numerous department academic awards.
Currently, Maria is an avid indoor climber, climbing at least three days per week. She also loves hiking, traveling, making music, and hanging out with her cats. “I grew up out in the country where as a child I used to socialize feral barn cats and strays so that we could adopt them out to local families,” Maria shares. “I really love building connections with skittish or timid cats who have had a tough life.”
