PrepNow Tutor - Daniel M.
A self-proclaimed space and tech geek, Daniel’s three pillars for growth are service, knowledge, and building connections. He holds a BS in physics and astronomy from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he was a Math Merit Scholar and received the Presidential Scholarship. Daniel is currently tutoring and pursuing an MS in computer science from Clemson University.
Daniel started tutoring in high school and was quick to discover his love for helping students experience the aha moment. “I am an empathic person so if I see a student happy about understanding the material it makes me happy as well,” he explains. In addition to tutoring high school math and physics, Daniel is comfortable with the calculus sequences, differential equations, linear algebra, and the college introductory physics sequence. He’s also taught preschoolers as an America Reads America Counts Tutor.
When working with students one-on-one, Daniel utilizes an integrative and personal approach. “I find unique ways for a student to connect to the material they are learning,” Daniel says. “This could be creating a connection through other subjects they have learned, details from their personal interests, and current events.” He adds that it’s important to emphasize the topic being learned so that if his students forget some of the information, it will be easier to search for how to find and relearn the information again.
In high school, Daniel ran track and field and participated in band, the National Honor Society, and the chess team. In college, he was an undergraduate liaison and involved with PhysVan, the physics peer mentor program, and the Society for Equity in Astronomy.
After earning his bachelor’s degree, Daniel traveled through Mexico to connect to his Hispanic roots and improve his Spanish speaking skills. Daniel enjoys reading sci-fi novels, doing volunteer work, playing board games and video games, learning the piano, and studying German on Duolingo. “I have gone ziplining in Mexico and I’m fluent in Spanish,” Daniel shares.
