PrepNow Tutor - Raven C.
Raven is an architect who also tackles freelance graphic design and photography projects on the side. She holds a BS in architecture and environmental design from Morgan State University. It was while Raven pursued her degree that she also became enamored of education. Indeed, since 2016, Raven has worked part-time as a tutor, helping students in English, social studies, chemistry, physics and math (arithmetic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics). Raven has also worked previously as a test-prep tutor and is excited to get back to her old stomping grounds with StudyPoint.
Raven’s instructional strategy is to involve her students intentionally with their own learning. She challenges herself to never provide students directly with answers. She likens her style to “call-and-response” oratory. That is, she says, “I call for students to verbalize what they struggle with and what they excel in. After I assess their responses, I walk them through a practice set of questions that provides me more insight.” From there, Raven provides tips, guidance, and methodologies to help students, but she encourages them to come to the answers they need on their own. All the while, she is ready to suggest alternate routes for each student, as she knows that default strategies do not work universally.
Raven has always been active in her life. In high school, for example, she was involved in chess, robotics, the homecoming committee, dance, swimming, soccer, and badminton! An even bigger part of her life, though—since she was eight years old—has been The Sims video game. Still a player these days, Raven counts that game as a primary influence on her choice of a career in architecture. These days, when not building real or imagined communities, Raven enjoys working out, making her own clothes, and traveling.
