PrepNow Tutor - Abhishek V.
A robotics and mechanical engineer with over twelve years of experience designing and building innovative systems, Abhishek loves solving real-world challenges through creative engineering. He is passionate about learning and enjoys sharing knowledge through teaching and mentoring. Abhishek studied mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas and completed his BS in robotics engineering from the University of California at Santa Cruz. Since recently graduating, he has been mentoring and teaching robotics and test prep while pursuing his engineering passion projects.
Abhishek started tutoring in high school, initially teaching mathematics, and continued throughout college. “My proudest moment as a teacher was when my student received admission to his dream university, which he never believed was possible to attend,” Abhishek shares. “This gave him confidence to do things he was previously unsure of.”
Abhishek has taught the following high school topics: English, biology, and mathematics (SAT math, algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, and calculus); he has also taught college students essay writing and advanced mathematics, namely advanced engineering mathematics, multivariable calculus, business calculus, and differential equations. When tutoring test prep, Abhishek aims to appear relatable to his students. “I would like them to find comfort in knowing that I understand the struggles of high school and standardized testing,” he says.
When asked to describe his approach to tutoring, Abhishek says, “I believe the two words that describe my teaching style are comfortable and firm. I love establishing a connection with my students that allows them to know that it is okay to be wrong and that it is a safe environment to take one's best guess. At the same time, I like to be firm in allowing my students to find the logical explanation for their answer choices. This allows them to develop the logical reasoning skills necessary to tackle their coursework.” Abhishek believes that students are more often than not capable of doing coursework beyond the estimation of their school system. “The key to unlocking this potential lies in finding and utilizing the thought processes that the student relies on normally,” he explains.
In high school, Abhishek was a powerlifter, played on the varsity tennis player, founded two robotics teams and a STEM projects club, and was part of Health Occupations Students of America. In college, he was the recipient of numerous scholarships, worked at the Tactile Manipulation Lab at UCSC to develop robotics actuating mechanisms, and contributed to the robotics process automation at General Motors Financial.
“Some of my hobbies include playing jazz piano, climbing, and traveling,” Abhishek says. “I am very good at Guitar Hero! I love Rhythm games.”
