PrepNow Tutor - Kelsey H.

A tutor who loves science and learning, Kelsey holds a BS in anthropology, biology, and psychology from the University of Rhode Island. Throughout her undergraduate studies, Kelsey worked in a cellular molecular biology research lab, studying Fanconi Anemia and instructing as a teaching assistant for various courses. After graduating, Kelsey worked in a neuroscience lab at the University of Maryland Baltimore for a year. “I love working in the lab, but found myself missing the classroom,” she explains. “Tutoring allows me to help students and stay connected to the classroom.” Kelsey is currently tutoring and preparing to apply for graduate school in biomedical research.
Kelsey discovered her passion for tutoring while helping her siblings with their schoolwork. As an undergraduate, she worked as a teaching assistant for various courses; she also tutored biology, psychology, writing, and math (with a focus on algebra through calculus). “Seeing students who once struggled to understand a tough topic get excited when they finally comprehend it due to their hard work fills me with joy,” Kelsey says. “My proudest moment was when a student told me that they actually enjoyed science because of me.”
Kelsey is an excellent test prep tutor because she loves breaking down difficult subjects and her teaching style is adaptable. “One of the reasons why I enjoy SAT/ACT prep is due to pattern recognition,” she explains. “I like to show students how to approach a problem in different ways. There are various strategies (such as backsolving, substitution, rearranging, etc.) that I use to allow problems to be viewed differently. My goal is to make topics that seem overwhelming and complex become questions that the student can confidently answer.” Kelsey always works to determine how her students learn best and employs different teaching styles to increase engagement.
In high school, Kelsey played volleyball and lacrosse. In college, she received the RI-INBRE Special Fellows Award and Best INBRE Flash Talk at the 2022 National IDeA Symposium of Biomedical Research Excellence for her research presentations.
Outside of teaching, Kelsey enjoys getting lost in books and loves genres ranging from fantasy to dark academia. She also loves lifting at the gym, going on outdoor adventures with her dogs, and traveling. “I have traveled to Iceland, England, France, and Italy, and I would love to travel more to experience other cultures and meet more people.”
