PrepNow Tutor - Joe L.

Joe argues that his own journey is rooted in the history and dedication of his family. A descendant of immigrants who worked hard and truly achieved the American Dream, Joe knows that had his family not educated themselves (in language, industry, and social mores, e.g.) he would not be in the position he is in today. He has never forgotten that lesson, so he has dedicated his life to learning and education.
Formally, Joe holds a BA in psychology from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. In pursuing that degree and in his life in general, Joe has challenged himself to remain curious and open to learning, and he credits that attitude with giving his life purpose and gratitude. In fact, he argues that his most treasured personal relationships—those with his wife and best friends—all developed through education.
It is not surprising that Joe began teaching others as soon as he graduated. Indeed, he has years of experience tutoring K-12 students in many different areas: he has worked with students in the language arts, including English and Spanish, up to the AP level; he has tutored math, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus, up to the AP level; and he has tutored general science courses up to the AP level. In addition, Joe has experience helping students with learning and behavioral differences: he has worked as an applied behavior analyst and has worked with students who have had obsessive-compulsive disorders, attention deficit disorders, and Autistic spectrum disorders. Joe embraces the adaptability needed to successfully tutor students of any background and at any level of achievement.
He takes this approach because he believes that education is a gift that cannot be taken lightly. He says, “There exists a tremendous amount of power in education, and everyone deserves the opportunity to discover their maximum intellectual potential.” In order to aid in this discovery, Joe always approaches students with empathy and understanding. He also seeks to model the impact education has had on him so that students can become energized in their own learning processes. He says, “I strive to help students on their journeys to curiosity and self-confidence: to encourage them to explore, ask questions, answer questions, and wonder about future ones.”
In Joe’s spare time, he tends to undertake other things that feed his curiosity. In high school, he earned the honor of first chair in clarinet for the orchestra. Since then, he has taken up guitar, trying to master genres such as folk and bossa nova. Finally, in addition to hiking, reading voraciously, and spending time with his family, Joe has taken up cooking as a means of constant exploration. Currently, he is using his wood and charcoal smoker to serve up dishes such as whole salmon fillets and spatchcock turkeys.
