PrepNow Tutor - Evan A.

With a strong background in holistic pedagogy practices, Evan has a meticulous eye for detail and a passion for collaborative problem-solving. He holds several degrees: a BA in philosophy and English literature from the University of Wisconsin Madison; an MEd from the University of Louisville; and an MPP from the University of Minnesota. Evan was a teacher at Jefferson County Public Schools for three years before transitioning to work as an academic advisor at Hamline University. After two years in this role, he returned to school to pursue his Master of Public Policy degree. In addition to tutoring test prep, Evan currently serves as a legal assistant to a class-action firm.
“I started my teaching career as an alternative certification candidate in 2019; and, as such, my experience was to hit the ground running and utilize my resources to ensure effective and impactful instruction,” Evan shares. “I love seeing the perspectives as well as different methods of approaching problems that students demonstrate on a daily basis. Each student is a unique learner; it's imperative as an instructor to not only recognize that fact, but also to uplift your learners. I encourage them to utilize their disparate talents to maximize their understanding of both the material and the world around them.” In addition to teaching English and language arts in the classroom, Evan has extensive experience tutoring the ACT and SAT.
Evan started teaching in an International Baccalaureate setting; this inspired his love of multi-modal learning, project-based learning, and creative collaboration. His philosophy is grounded in a student-driven experience, centered around the student identifying their own strengths and growth areas through holistic conversations that focus on the student's intrinsic motivation and self-stated goals.
“I employ a SMART methodology to approach challenging growth areas, which provides structure, scaffolding, and room to make errors and grow from mistakes,” Evan explains. “Creating an environment where students feel safe to question, explore, and critique creates students with stronger critical thinking, stress-management, and problem-solving skills; these characteristics are imperative to a strong performance in all scholastic areas.”
As a student, Evan was on the swim team, participated in voter outreach, and played the violin in the orchestra. He also played football, baseball, and tennis.
Currently, he is a frequent hiker, enjoys music, and can often be found in a book. “I have three dogs and two cats, it's a zoo at home!” Evan is a fluent speaker of Hindi, Urdu, and Nepali.
