PrepNow Tutor - Clio P.
A friendly and approachable tutor, Clio loves to find creative ways to think through situations and problems and help others. She holds a BA summa cum laude in interdisciplinary studies from Coastal Carolina University. “As part of that well-rounded liberal arts education, I took courses in political science, public health, film, and dance,” Clio says. “The bulk of my studies was in sustainability, which was a blend of environmental science with public policy.” Most of Clio’s work since college has been in the arts world, and, in addition to tutoring test prep, she is currently an instructor at a ballroom dance studio. She has also worked in bodywork fields, which blended her physiology knowledge and dance background into a practice to help others.
Clio started tutoring while in college. “I had always been the friend who helps edit others' papers, and I was excited to apply this on a more professional level,” she shares. As a tutor in the university's writing center, she advised students of all majors and degree types, up through master's students. “Sometimes this meant helping freshmen with their very first essays in college, and other times helping seniors wrap up a thesis in statistics or biology,” Clio recalls. “Helping students interpret texts and write in specific styles was a big part of this role.”
Clio’s tutoring style is rooted in relationships. “I think it's hard to learn when you don't have a connection with your teacher, so building a rapport is critical,” she explains. “I try to make students feel comfortable and capable. One of my philosophies is that we all know more than we think. I like to ask leading questions to get a student thinking and then jump in to help more when needed.”
In high school, Clio was president of the Gender and Sexuality Awareness Club and French Club and received the Global Scholar award both junior and senior year. She was a Poetry Out Loud finalist and was a state finalist for the English Speaking Union Shakespeare Competition in 2019. She also participated in the Outdoor Adventure Club, and dance has always been a big part of her life. Clio was in the choir through college, including the gospel choir, and loves to spend time outside. She’s often reading or writing, and she makes jewelry. “I am also practicing my Spanish and am excited about traveling to more Spanish-speaking countries,” Clio shares. “As an artist, I find I am always absorbing information around me and enjoy learning most anything.”
