PrepNow Tutor - Theresa H.

A lifelong learner committed to helping others reach their own education goals, Theresa holds a BS in chemistry with a biochemistry concentration from Haverford College and is currently pursuing an MSE in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania. She has worked as a math and science tutor since 2018. In college, Theresa was a head peer tutor and chemistry teaching assistant, running office hours and study sessions for peers. As a graduate student, she has worked as a research assistant in computational chemistry and as an intern at a 3D printing fabrication lab.
Theresa started tutoring in high school as a volunteer and immediately fell in love with it. “Getting to work with students and see their excitement over all the little and big successes is extremely rewarding,” Theresa says. “Since then, I have experienced tutoring various subjects at different levels, my favorite subject being mathematics.” She has tutored science and math courses to students from middle school through to college level in many subjects: science (physics, biology, and IB and AP chemistry); math (algebra 1 & 2, geometry, pre-calculus); and SAT prep.
“As a visual learner, my main mode of teaching revolves around using models and graphics, especially for STEM subjects,” Theresa says. “I offer guiding questions and try to allow the student to feel independent in their approaches to answers. The most important element of tutoring is ensuring understanding and then testing that understanding by checking in and encouraging questions. I strive to meet the preferred teaching methods of my students and am open to any and all feedback.”
In college, Theresa was a member of the Varsity Women's Soccer team for all four years and the Women's Track & Field team for a year. “I acted as chemistry ‘Zazu’ my senior year of college, or, in other words, as an advocate for all chemistry majors,” Theresa explains. “My main responsibilities included assisting with hosting guest speakers, running department events, and encouraging future chemistry majors.”
Outside of school and research, Theresa enjoys exploring the outdoors. “You will likely find me training for my next marathon or hiking a new trail,” she says.
