PrepNow Tutor - Cat C.
A versatile tutor with a STEM background, Cat has instructed students in topics as diverse as writing, math, English, and test prep. She received her BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan - Flint, and then acquired a master's in orthotics & prosthetics from Eastern Michigan University. Since graduating with her master's, she has worked as a tutor while searching for the perfect orthotics and prosthetics residency.
Cat started teaching and tutoring as a volunteer TA for the University of Michigan's Honors Program there in Flint; in this capacity, she organized the class and tutored peers with their writing assignments. "Later, I expanded this to tutoring computer science material and higher-level math classes," she shares. "I kept expanding my scope to include other topics and the rest is history!"
As a private tutor, Cat has specialized in K-12 math, ELA, and all levels of college math. She has also tutored test prep; she's proud to share that her students have seen impressive score improvements!
Cat shares that she has ADHD and dyscalculia, the latter she describes as "sort of like math dyslexia." While these challenges affected her ability to apply new math skills, she "learned a lot of tricks along the way" and went on to earn an engineering degree. "One of my goals as a tutor is to make sure students with varied needs get all the resources they need for success, but also to spark hope that even if you struggle hard with some stuff at first, you can still ace it down the road!"
Cat's philosophy is that everyone's brain works differently. "I don't know what will work best for you, but I can give you five different ways to solve a problem and help you find out which meshes best with your own brain!" She views these many strategies as tools in a toolbox. "The more tools a student has to pull from, the better a foundation we can build together," she posits. Above all, she strives to make education—and extra support—accessible to all learners.
In Cat's freshman year of undergrad, she received the William J. Branstrom Freshman Prize for Superior Scholastic Achievement. Her stellar grades also landed her on the dean's list for multiple semesters.
In her spare time, she loves working with her hands. "I crochet, and recently have gotten into embroidery," she shares. She is also a singer and songwriter.
