PrepNow Tutor - Maria G.
Having tutored young children as well as fellow high school students, Maria has tutored all subjects, including English, reading, writing, math, science, and history. She received a bachelor's in multidisciplinary studies—with an emphasis in biology—from West Virginia University. Her stellar ACT score earned her the 2013 Promise Scholarship, awarded by the state of West Virginia. She is currently an advanced medical student at Oceania University of Medicine in Samoa. Her experience taking board exams for MDs gives her extra insight into test-taking strategies. She also tutors other medical students who are studying for their board exams.
Maria started her tutoring journey in high school, where she worked at an after-school program; she also was a Key Club member and helped younger high school students with their classwork and test prep. In addition to her medical school tutees, she has worked with students as young as age 5 and as old as 18.
Maria describes her style as "patient and approachable." Placing a heavy emphasis on collaboration and interactive learning modalities, she gives students the chance to talk and explain the process behind their answers, wrong or right. "I've learned from personal experience that people tend to remember the questions they've gotten wrong, rather than the ones they've gotten right," she says. By focusing on process over product, her students can acquire and finesse their skills on a deeper level. "I also believe that if a student can teach a topic back to me, then they will remember it better."
In high school, Maria played tennis and soccer. Her current passion is singing—she loves sharing her voice via karaoke, weddings, and national anthems at sporting events! "My roommate in college is also a singer and we had a competition as to who could sing the most national anthems in a year. He sang four, and I sang five," she proudly proclaims.
