PrepNow Tutor - Joshua N.
A creative, community-minded tutor since 2017, Joshua loves art, science, math, and everything in between. He holds a BS in neuroscience and a BA in psychology from Indiana University and an MA in teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education. After earning his degrees, Joshua spent a year in Madrid, Spain as an assistant English teacher at a seventh through twelfth-grade public school. Following this, he joined Teach for America, teaching middle school science for three years, during which he was rated as an "effective” teacher in final evaluations every year. Joshua is now a test prep tutor and completes contracted public artwork for the City of Tacoma.
“I have always enjoyed learning and had wanted to be a teacher from high school onward,” Joshua says. His first notable and rewarding teaching experience was when he tutored his high school classmates after school in calculus and statistics. “I remembered feeling very rewarded that I was able to help someone understand something difficult,” Joshua says. During his first year of college, he continued to tutor peers by holding review sessions for students in his dorm who were struggling with their introductory science classes. He went on to work as a teaching assistant for a biology professor for two years, helping write quizzes, proctor exams, and leading a weekly lab class for undergraduate education majors. “This cemented that I would continue to be a life-long learner and help share my passion for education with others,” Joshua says. In addition to his experience teaching and tutoring science, Joshua has likewise years of experience tutoring test prep for the ACT, SAT, and state exams.
“I would consider my teaching style to be very hands-on and interactive,” Joshua says. “As a science teacher by training, I know that my students do some of their best learning during laboratory experiments. I strive to make my lessons engaging so my students get the most out of their education.” Joshua teaches from a place of empathy and compassion, while also still holding his students to a high standard of both behavioral and academic excellence. “I believe that school should be a place where students feel comfortable and safe to learn and grow and a place where they can share their passions and goals with others,” Joshua shares.
As a student, Joshua participated in symphonic band, pep band, Academic Decathlon, spell bowl, art club, National Honor Society, and speech and debate. He was a member of the Psi Chi National Honor Society and received the I.U. Health Hospital Scholarship and Indiana University Provost Scholarship.
Joshua enjoys spending his time in nature, drawing, sewing, traveling with friends and family, and spending time with his fifteen-year-old dog. “I am constantly looking for new challenges and ways to explore the world around me, be it through travel, meeting new people, or learning something new,” Joshua says. Joshua has been to twenty-six countries and lived in four different time zones.
