PrepNow Tutor - Kathy B.
Kathy has been tutoring one-on-one and teaching in classrooms since she graduated from the University of California San Diego, where she obtained a BS in clinical psychology and a minor in political science. In college, she joined a lab serving elementary school students and fell in love with the process of working with students. "We had to find creative ways to teach them and I found it very rewarding," she notes. Her first job post-college was tutoring multiple subjects in a public school. As of winter 2023, she works as an assistant teacher at a private school, where she runs her own classroom. While she has experience tutoring all academic subjects, her specialties include math, science, and Spanish.
Kathy's tutoring style is to first observe her students and allow them to work through the problems themselves. Once she has an idea of her students' processes, she'll step in to guide them through roadblocks and suggest ways to help them improve. "I often ask the student questions," she says. "Simply telling the student what to fix won't help them remember how to solve the problem the next time they see it." One of her greatest achievements as a teacher was when she helped low-scoring math students significantly improve their grades! "We focused on what the students thought were the most difficult parts of math, while also practicing what they already knew to strengthen their knowledge," she explains.
During high school, Kathy was involved in her school's band, United Nations, and cooking club. In college, she participated in a summer bridge program and was part of the Raza Resource Centro, which focuses on providing services to the surrounding communities. These days, Kathy likes to draw, sew, and go on hikes.
Kathy has a pet who is a wolf-hybrid dog (who looks like he's a full wolf)! "He is super cuddly and likes to be pet," she shares.
